Online course (C1)

Sanitation and public health

This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the relationship between sanitation and public health, and how we can control diseases and improve human health. By the end of this course, you will be able to identify a range of health hazards associated with human excreta in communities, identify disease and transmission routes, and evaluate the control and prevention of health hazards. You will look at case studies of sanitation intervention trials and learn about the latest risk evaluation technologies. You will embrace the critical role that sanitation plays in promoting public health, and you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills you need to design and implement sanitation systems that protect and promote the health of communities.

Course information

  • Objectives

    After completion of the course you will be able to:

    • Identify the range of health hazards related to human excreta in communities;
    • Identify disease and transmission routes associated with human excreta;
    • Evaluate control and prevention of health hazards associated with human excreta.
  • Syllabus

    This course covers the following topics:

    • Introduction to public health
    • Human health hazards and human excreta
    • Review and assessment of transmission routes
    • Characteristics and lifecycles of sanitation-relevant pathogens
    • Control measures
    • Risk evaluation tools
  • Delivery method

    Each course in this series consists of video lectures, presentation slides, reading materials, exercises, and assignments. In principle, each video presentation has its own complementary presentation slides. Some parts of the course also include exercises and/or assignments. Please note that this course is free, open access, and does not include guidance, exams, assessment, or certificate. As a rule of thumb, if you spend 8 hours per week following this course, you should be able to complete the curriculum within 10 weeks.

    Instructions on how to use the course materials are available here.

  • Organization

    Each course has its own coding system. The code of this course is C 1. Each course consists of units. Each unit has a unique code, for example, U 1.1. In the section ‘Unit 1.1 videos │ …” you can find and watch all video-recorded lectures that belong to this unit. Similarly, in the section ‘Unit 1.1 course materials│ …”  you can download all materials that make this unit (e.g. high-resolution videos, presentation slides, reading materials, exercises, assignments, etc) as a single compressed file (in zip format). Some files may be of considerable size, so you need to assure that your computer has sufficient bandwidth and capacity for downloading.
